Midland County 4-H Exceptional Riders Program

TALL IN THE SADDLE

A Michigan 4-H Proud Equestrian Program with certified therapeutic riding instructors.

VOLUNTEERS  -- (VIPs - Very Important Persons)

Our program relies heavily on volunteers for its continued success, if you are interested in volunteering with the Midland County 4-H Exceptional Riders Program, please review the following job descriptions and email our Volunteer Coordinators (Kathi Hitchcock and Ann Rowe) for more information.

Each new volunteer will need to attend New Volunteer Orientation for appropriate training prior to being eligible to assist our program.

Spring 2010 Date:  Tue, March 23 from 7-9 p.m.
Location:
Meadow Ridge Farm, 3409 E. Siebert Road, Midland

If you wish to become a volunteer, but missed new volunteer orientation, please contact our volunteer coordinators.

In our weekly classes we utilize volunteers primarily as horse leaders and side walkers, although assistance with grooming and tacking up horses is sometimes required.

A lesson assistant to coordinate arena set-up, as well as necessary equipment/props required for the instructor's lesson plan is helpful.

We would also like to fill the position of "greeter/gopher" to welcome students and parents, assist with student helmet selection and correct fit,  prompt students to do warm-up stretches or exercises to prepare for mounting their horse and riding.

Horse leaders provide a safety measure so that the horse will never be out of control of the rider.

Side walkers walk alongside of the student sometimes providing physical support to the student and sometimes just reinforcing the commands of the instructor or offering emotional support.
